THIRTY-FIVE

After stopping by Robin’s to get Bernie, I got home just after midnight and opened the door to a house that looked like one of those homes from the TV show Hoarders. There were mounds of laundry, boxes, bags, and clutter everywhere.

“What the hell happened?” I said, to no one in particular.

I heard Natalie’s voice from somewhere behind the piles of stuff that was stacked almost to the ceiling. “Mo and me are in the atrium, drownin’ our sorrows. There’s a path through the kitchen, then turn left.”

Bernie and I did as she instructed, moving through the maze of clutter. When we got to the kitchen, there were groceries piled everywhere, dirty dishes in the sink, and boxes on the counters.

We finally made it to the sunroom, where Mo tossed a box off the sofa and told me to have a seat. “If we don’t get Otto back soon, we’re gonna declare the place a toxic waste dump. Baby sis and me can’t fend for ourselves anymore.”

“We got us a bad case of the Habitrail blues,” Natalie agreed. “Dr. Phil said it’s one of them OCD disorders, and we probably need years of therapy.” She looked at Mo. “We might need medication. Or maybe just more wine.”

Mo poured me a glass of Chardonnay. “Let’s work on the grapes of wrath and worry ‘bout meds later.” She regarded me. “I take it things didn’t go so good with Joe.”

I sighed. “Is it that obvious?”

“You look like somebody who’s been locked in a hoarder house for a couple days. Does that mean he ain’t doing so good?”

“He’s still in a coma, not making any improvement.” I brushed a tear. “For the first time since he was injured, I’m worried that he might not make it.”

It took Mo a couple tries, but she managed to get out of her chair, come over, and hug me. “We’re here for you, no matter what happens.”

Natalie also came over and joined the hug-fest, as Bernie whined. “Dogs and sisters above misters forever,” she said.

After we parted and found seats and wine again, Natalie told me the latest on their Craven investigation. “We invited Georgie to come by on Sunday night, so we can grill him ‘bout murderin’ his cousin.”

“We’re gonna need your help,” Mo said. “Georgie seems a little off.”

“Off? In what way?”

“When baby sis called him, he was saying some crazy stuff ‘bout the family.”

Natalie agreed. “He said Bobby was innocent, and he’s willin’ to tell us the whole story ‘bout what really happened.”

“We gotta get to the bottom of things before we lose Otto for good.”

“How are he and Grover getting along?” I asked.

“Total love-fest,” Natalie said. “But Otto’s pretty loyal, so we might still have a chance.”

“What’s the latest on you and Hud?” Mo asked. “You guys still getting together?”

“I think so, but I had to reschedule because of my trip. We’re planning to take the dogs to the park this weekend, maybe on Sunday afternoon.”

Natalie poured us more wine and said, “Mo’s got a date with Harley this weekend.
